چکیده

Guttiferae (Clusiaceae) is a family of plants that includes more than 37 genera and 1600 species [1]. Characteristic to this family is its large variation in plant morphology, which makes it an important group of plants for the study of floral diversification and evolutionary plasticity. Althoughmainly confined to the tropical areas, this family also includes the genus Hypericum, a plant that is found widely around the Mediterranean area. Several plants of the Guttiferae family have a rich history in ethnomedicine for their broad-spectrum antibacterial and healing properties. For instance, the antibacterial and antidepressant activities ofHypericum perforatum (St. John’s wort) have been noted in traditional European medicine. In fact,Hypericum extracts have been tested in various clinical trials and are currently used in certain countries for the treatment of depressive, anxiety, and sleep disorders [2–11]. On the other hand, members of the Garcinia genus of tropical trees have considerable value as sources of medicines, pigments, foodstuffs, and lumber [12, 13]. Chemically, the Clusiaceae family of plants constitutes a rich source of polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols and xanthones. Both chemical classes have generated substantial interest due to their fascinating chemical structures and potent bioactivities [10]. This chapter summarizes the chemical classification, biosynthesis, and synthetic approaches toward these compounds.

Novel polyprenylated phloroglucinols from Hypericum sampsonii.

Hypericum sampsonii Hance (Clusiaceae) is a folk medicine used in Taiwan to treat blood stasis, relieve swelling, and as an anti-hepatitis drug. Two new polyprenylated phloroglucinol derivatives, hypersampsone R (1) and hypersampsone S (2), and a known prenylated benzophenone, hyperibone K (3) were isolated from the aerial parts of H. sampsonii. Their structures were determined by extensive 1D ...

In vitro and in vivo antiangiogenic activity of caged polyprenylated xanthones isolated from Garcinia hanburyi Hook. f.

Eleven known caged polyprenylated xanthones 1-11 were isolated from the resin of Garcinia hanburyi Hook. f., and their structures were identified by their MS, NMR and UV spectra. These xanthones showed significant cytotoxicities against four human cancer cell lines (HeLa, A549, HCT-116, and HepG-2) and strong inhibition against the proliferation of the HUVEC cell line in vitro by the MTT method...

Xanthone and sesquiterpene derivatives from the fruits of Garcinia scortechinii.

The fruits of Garcinia scortechinii afforded 10 new compounds: four caged-tetraprenylated xanthones (scortechinones Q-T, 1-4), four rearranged xanthones (scortechinones U-X, 5-8), and two sesquiterpene derivatives (scortechterpenes A, B, 9, 10), together with 14 known compounds: one sesquiterpene, two biflavonoids, and 11 caged-polyprenylated xanthones. Their structures were elucidated by analy...

Extracts of Hypericum perforatum L. (St John’s wort) are now successfully Abstract competing for status as a standard antidepressant therapy. Because of this, great effort has been devoted to identifying the active antidepressant compounds in the extract. From a phytochemical point of view, St John’s wort is one of the best-investigated medicinal plants. A series of bioactive compounds has been...

Thong”) is a small to medium-sized tree found in Central and Southern part of Thailand. The latex is used as a dye and folk medicine for potent purgative and infected wounds. Previous phytochemical investigation on the latex of G. hanburyi led to the identification of eleven new and four known caged-xanthones. Caged-polyprenylated xanthones have been isolated from several Garcinia species, e.g....
